It seems that everyone is listening to podcasts these days; including myself. For some time; I've been a fan of the Knowledge Project; a podcast by Shane Parrish of Farnham St. TheKnowledge Projectpodcast is a long-form interview podcast that explores mental models; decision-making; leadership; and personal growth. Parrish; the founder ofFarnham Street (FS)—a popular blog dedicated to mastering the art of clear thinking—interviews a wide range of guests; including entrepreneurs; investors; psychologists; authors and thought leaders. Shane's approach to these podcasts is to help the listener "Master the best of what other people have already figured out." Recently; he introduced a segment called "Lessons from Outliers;" in which Shane discusses and details someone who was or is an "outlier;" i.e.; someone who did or does remarkable work. The first episode was about the rise and rise and fall of the Canadian retailer Eatons… which; at one point; was a Canadian retail institution that commanded ~60% of the Canadian retail market.
It is a fascinating story of how the first generation built it; the second expanded it; and the later generations lost it. It makes for interesting listening.
The last time I looked; there were 215 episodes; with a new one every 2 weeks. Some of the more interesting ones that I've listened to recently are:
- Timothy Eaton and the Original "Everything Store": - #214
- April Dunford: The Marketing Expert (and positioning statements) - #201
- Matthew Dicks: The Storey Telling Expert - #202
- Dr Rhonda Patrick: Diet Essentials for Healthy Living #191
- Angela Duckworth: Grit & Human Behavior - #109.
A heads-up: these aren't your typical 30-minute podcasts. Episodes can run for nearly 2 hours; although most run for around 60 - 90 minutes; making them perfect for that long bike ride or drive. The Knowledge Project is a fascinating resource; and there's always something interesting to listen to. You can listen to the podcasts at any of the standard podcast apps. "If you're concerned about any specific areas of cost management; reach out for a chat. Most businesses know there are savings within their cost base; but often; they don’t know how to get those savings; or it’s too time-consuming.”
