TuTech Innovation GmbH was founded in 1992 by the Technical University of Hamburg-Harburg. The Technical University of Hamburg-Harburg holds a 51 per cent stake in the company, while the Free and Hanseatic City of Hamburg holds the remaining 49 per cent. In 2004, all Hamburg universities followed TuTech's example and founded Hamburg Innovation GmbH (HI) as a joint company for knowledge and technology transfer, whose operational business is handled by TuTech.
From 2004 to 2009, TuTech and HI acquired and processed a total of 3,085 projects in collaboration with Hamburg's universities, the University of Kiel and individual institutes at the University of Bayreuth and Purdue University. The corresponding order volume amounts to 104 million euros.
