We are hearing more and more often that sustainable companies will be the most profitable; but what does that really mean? How can an organization become sustainable? And above all; why should it do so?
Let's start at the beginning. It was in 1987 when sustainable development was first mentioned in the Brundtland Report. This document explored the environmental impact on economic development and globalisation caused by industrialisation and population growth; and began to seek possible solutions to mitigate the consequences.
Later; in 2015; the United Nations General Assembly established the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) together with 169 targets under the name Agenda 2030; which became a roadmap and challenge for society as a whole and especially for businesses.
Until very recently; everything related to this aspect has been integrated into the CSR area in many organizations; and there seems to be a growing demand for it to be considered an active and relevant part of corporate strategy. According to the Spanish Global Compact Network; 80% of companies are committed to the 2030 Agenda; but only 24% of them have defined and established specific commitments that can be measured.
It is therefore clear that the time has come for companies to make a real commitment and act as true agents of change; contributing to a more sustainable; secure and prosperous planet.
As noted in the report by As noted in the Deloitte report 2030 Purpose: Good Business and a Better Future"; in recent years some of the leading academic studies estimate that organizations that have committed to the 2030 Agenda have outperformed their competitors in the stock market by 11%.
